Modafinil is a prescribed medication that was originally manufactured to help with fatigue and tiredness throughout the day. The aim to help people that suffer from conditions such as narcolepsy and those that struggle to sleep due to shift work. Users soon discovered it could also help with cognitive functions as well.
By using Modafinil you may be able to see benefits such as;
- Reduced Fatigue
- Improved Ability To learn
- Increased Concentration and Focus
- Improved Overall Mood
What is Modafinil?
Modafinil is sold under a number of different brand names, Alertec, Modavigil and Provigil. Here in the United States it is a controlled substance because of the potential risks of getting addicted to it. It is this reason why it is a prescribed drug and not a simple over the counter solution.
As mentioned when it was originally manufactured it was aimed to be a treatment for a number of sleep disorders. These included Narcolepsy, which is when you fall asleep suddenly. Its also used to help with Hypersonina, a condition when continue to be tired and fatigued throughout the day. During trials patients that used Modafinil had noticed their alertness during the day had increased.
It was during these trials that it had been discovered that it could also be used as a nootropic. Patients that used it had noticed that their focus and concentration had increased, as well as their ability to learn. Initiialy Modafinil was used by those that had sleep deprivation and those that did not, both types had noticed an improvement in cognitive function.
Modafinil Side Effects
It has quite a lot of potential side effects, although some are more uncommon than others. It’s important to remember that it does have addictive properties, why you do need a prescription to get it. Some of the minor side effects may sort themselves out on their own, although I would recommend consulting a medical professional.
Minor side effects include;
There are potentially some more serious side effects to using Modafinil (Alertec, Modavigil and Provigil). If you do experience any of these then you MUST stop taking it and consult with your doctor straight away.
These side effects could include;
- Blistering with peeling and red skin rash
- Bruising, numbness, weakness of the muscles and tingling
- White sores on the lips or in the mouth
- Chest pain/Uneven heartbeats
As you can see there are a lot of potential side effects. Some of them are terrible and quite serious! There are however some really good alternatives that are natural nootropics. I would recommend checking these out, more info on them below.
The dosage of Modafinil does vary depending on the treatment. Should you take 50mg, 100mg, 200mg or even 400mg? The correct Modafinil dosage should be stated on the prescription given by your doctor. With a pill such as this, you should never increase the dosage unless stated by a medical professional.
From what I can see from research, the dosage is one 200mg pill to be taken once per day.
I have received a number of questions regarding Modafinil so wanted to put together this FAQ. If you do have any questions please post them in the comments below and ill answer as quickly as possible.
Modafinil and Alcohol is it safe?
If you was to ask a medical professional, they would advise not to drink whilst taking Modafinil. There has however been no known serious interactions. It would be advised to take Modafinil in the morning and then by the time you have alcohol in the evening it should be out your system.
Bear in mind that the two can increase the side effects of each other as they do both dehydrate the body. Resulting in a hangover that is potentially much worse, as well as risk of not being hydrated enough. Make sure you do drink plenty of water whilst using.
I would advise against combining the two and any concerns please do consult a medical professional.
How Long Does Modafinil Stay In System For?
Modafinil and other brands should last a full day. You would therefore take it in the morning and it should keep you alert and awake during the day for a full 8 hours. 2-4 hours after that you may notice the results lessen as it leaves your system.
It should be completely out of your system for when you are ready to sleep.
Is Modafinil Legal?
As mentioned before, Modafinil is a controlled substance. Therefore the availability of it is restricted. You are not able to simply buy over the counter. It is only possible to get Modafinil legally by prescription from your doctor.
Can I Get Addicted To Modafinil?
Initially it was believed that it it was not possible to get addicted to Modafinil. Recent research does however show that it could potentially be. In a study 10 men took brain scans after using Provigil and a placebo. These scans did actually show that it blocks dopamine transporters. Addictive drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine also does the same thing.
Where to buy Modafinil
It is not possible to buy Modafinil online or in any stores such as Amazon or eBay. If you do see it then I would recommend to stay well away, you don’t know what you are taking! Legally it is a controlled substance, if you are wanting to order Modafinil then you should consult your doctor and discuss it with them.
Our Final Verdict On Modafinil
To be honest I don’t really have any great comments to say about Modafinil. I suppose it has been proven to be effective since it is FDA approved. Its been manufactured to be more of a way to keep you alert and keep you awake. The cognitive benefits are only a by product of that and I don’t think that is enough. If you are looking for a product to improve brain functions, I would buy something that has been formulated to do just that.
The fact that it is prescription only also puts me off. Its expensive to see the doctor, never mind getting it on prescription as well! If we ignore the cost element of it, I also feel very nervous about seeing the doctor about things like this.
The final thing that REALLY puts me off are the potential side effects. I have usually been pretty good with pills and not really noticed any side effects, however some of the Modafinil side effects could potentially be really serious. Which is not something I would want to risk!
Safe Alternative to Modafinil?
It’s understandable why you might be interested in this, Alertec, Modavigil and Provigil. It has seem some impressive results and has had a lot of exposure. I personally would prefer to try a safe alternative to it. Something that I know is going to give me the same results if not more. A safe alternative that is not going to have the potential side effects that Modafinil has.
Choosing a natural alternative, also means I do not need a prescription. I can therefore order a good alternative online and receive it, without having to see my doctor.
There are however a lot of different Nootropic supplements, it’s not that easy to know which one to get. I have done a lot of research on the ingredients used and which ones are effective. I have also tested a number of the products and therefore feel I know which ones do and do not work.
I really do hope you have found this Modafinil review useful, if you do have any questions please do feel free to comment below.
